Aquaponics for Northern California

Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). It is becoming a popular method of farming all over the world. One reason is sustainability. Unlike conventional farming, aquaponic systems use very little water. This is because the water is recirculated within a closed system. The fish provide the fertilizer along with bacteria in the tank.

As the water flows through the system, the plant's roots act as a filter. This is how they receive nutrients which include: ammonia, nitrates, nitrites and phosphorus. Then, this freshly cleaned water recirculates through the system. One important aspect is the bacteria that colonizes around the growing medium and the plants' roots. Known as rhizobacteria these microorganisms play a vital part in growing healthy fish and vegetables.

Another sustainable feature of aquaponic farming is energy consumption. The systems run on little electricity and can even be used off the grid with alternative energy sources such as: solar, wind or hydroelectric power. Systems can be built to supply a single person household, a small family, or a large scale commercial farm or backyard.  Most importantly, once you understand how aquaponics works, it is easy to do! Aquaponics also supports local food production and provides easy access for community members to healthy organic food. The educational applications are endless. Many schools and communities already have local aquaponic farms. Short courses are currently being held in many cities across the country. Check around our links to find a program near you.
